Kinesiology: What You Need to Know!

What is kinesiology?

Kinesiology is the study of human movement, performance, and function. A multidisciplinary scientific approach of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, psychology and neuroscience is used to assist in the prevention or rehabilitation of injury & physiological conditions.

Kinesiologists are healthcare professionals and human movement specialists who apply best practices and latest evidence based scientific research in order to improve human performance, health and wellness.

Who do kinesiologists work with?

Anyone who can move can benefit from kinesiology  to improve health and wellness. For instance:

  • People suffering from an injury or disease.
  • High-performance athletes.
  • People preparing for or recovering from surgery.
  • Anyone wanting to improve their overall physical health.
What do kinesiologists do?

A kinesiologist can help you:

  • Develop therapeutic fitness programs to maintain your fitness during injury
  • Reducing the risk for re-injury
  • Improve the quality of life of anyone with chronic issues i.e. high blood pressure, obesity, arthritis, etc.

A kinesiologist can work with you to focus on:

  • Strength and conditioning: starting at your comfort level, train your body to be able to perform a chosen activity more easily and/or with lessened stress. For instance, working on improving your core strength. This type of training generally focuses on balance, agility, coordination, power, speed and reaction.
  • Flexibility and range of motion: with inadequate flexibility, performing everyday tasks can become difficult. Scientific evidence shows that including flexibility training and range of motion reduces the incidence of injury.
  • Work simulation activities: the goal of this individualized training is to allow you to return to your occupation as smoothly as possible. The focus is on improving strength and stamina to successfully complete the physical demands of a job. For instance, pushing carts of lifting weights to simulate a work environment.
  • Cardiovascular training: cardiovascular exercise is not only good for general health, but can aid in healing injuries by supplying freshly oxygenated blood cells to the affected area. Activities that increase your heart rate could include cycling, using an elliptical trainer, or an arm ergometer.
  • Education and teaching: kinesiologists have a wide range of knowledge and can provide customized exercise techniques for pain management that you can continue to do outside of your lessons!

No matter where you are in your health and fitness journey, a kinesiologist can help you get to your desired goals!
